Maria BachmannArtistic Director of Telluride MusicFest and violinist Maria Bachmann combines outstanding musicianship with dazzling technical command, a tone of exceptional purity and a magnetic stage presence. The New York Times has hailed her as “a violinist of soul and patrician refinement,” and The Boston Globe has similarly praised Ms. Bachmann as being “astonishing in every musical and technical regard.” Her recital cd,The Red Violin, was chosen by BBC Music Magazine as "North American CD of the Month". In 2009, she performed the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Sonata for Violin and Piano (2008). Highlights of 2009-10 include the world premiere of Paul Moravec’s Violin Concerto (2009) at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, and The World Premiere of Philip Glass’s Double Coneerto with Wendy Sutter and the Orchestra of the Hague in The Hague, Netherlands. Her 5th recital cd with partner Jon Klibonoff of Sonatas by Glass, Schubert, Ravel and Bach, will be released in 2011. Her numerous cds can be found on Sony/RCA Red Seal, Naxos, Koch, Bridge, BMG/Catalyst, Allegro, Marquis and Connoisseur Society labels. She has performed as soloist with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, orchestras in Japan, China, Taiwan, and Hungary, and worked with conductors Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano, and Marin Alsop. Ms. Bachmann studied at The Curtis Institute of Music with Ivan Galamian and Szymon Goldberg. She performs on a 1782 violin by Nicolo Gagliano. Alexis Pia GerlachAlexis Pia Gerlach, cello, has performed throughout the world as both chamber musician and soloist. She has collaborated with such conductors as Mstislav Rostropovich, and James DePriest, and with The Orchestra of St. Luke’s in New York, the Fort Worth Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, and Boston’s Metmorphosen Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared as guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the La Jolla Chamber Music Society, New Jersey Chamber Music Society, and at numerous festivals including Marlboro, Aspen, Piccolo Spoleto, and Caramoor where she is a Texaco Rising Star. Ms. Gerlach’s recordings of the Rachmaninoff and Franck Sonatas with pianist Fabio Bidini have been released on the Encore Performance Recordings label. In 2009, Ms. Gerlach was the soloist in the World Premiere of a work by Kevin Puts for Solo Cello and string quintet. She has performed Bach's Solo Cello Suites in a concert presentation for Rob Kapilow's "What Makes it Great" series, and has toured the United States and France with Musicians From Marlboro, and she is a member of Concertante, Ms. Gerlach studied with Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music and the Juilliard School.

Kathryn LockwoodKathryn Lockwood has been hailed as a violist of exceptional talents in reviews around the country. The Cleveland Plain Dealer proclaimed, "...Lockwood played the vociferous viola cadenza with mahogany beauty and vivid character." Kathryn is the violist of the internationally renowned LARK Quartet, and duoJalal, a unique viola and percussion duo with her husband Yousif Sheronick. Kathryn moved from her homeland of Australia to the United States in 1991 only to capture some of the most sought-after awards in the country such as the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Primrose Viola Competition. As an original member of Pacifica Quartet, Kathryn was heard live on National Public Radio's Performance Today and on the stages of Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Ravinia's Bennett Gordon Hall, Corcoran Gallery, St. Lawrence Center, and University of Thessaloniki / Greece. Currently on faculty at University of Massachusetts/Amherst, Ms. Lockwood was previously on the faculty at Rutgers University in NJ, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and National Music Camp in Australia. Ms. Lockwood earned her Master's Degree with Donald McInnes at the University of Southern California, and her Bachelor of Music Degree from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with Elizabeth Morgan. Adam NeimanAmerican pianist Adam Neiman is hailed as one of the premiere pianists of his generation, praised for possessing a rare blend of power, bravura, imagination, sensitivity, and technical precision. In 1999, he was a recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant. Neiman has performed as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Belgrade, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Saint Louis, San Francisco, Umbria, and Utah, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C. He has collaborated with such conductors as Yoel Levi, Andrew Litton, Peter Oundjian, and Leonard Slatkin. His European recital tours have brought him throughout Italy, France, Germany, and Japan, where he made an eight-city tour culminating in his debut at Tokyo's Suntory Hall. Neiman's '09-'10 season highlights include his debut with the Orchestra Verdi of Milan, a tour of Slovenia as soloist with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and performances with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile, and Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra. Neiman’s discography includes a 2-CD set of Mozart's early keyboard concertos K. 238, 246, and 271 and his award-winning 2-CD solo recital set entitled "Adam Neiman Live in Recital", proclaimed by the American Record Guide as it's "Critic's Choice" for 2007 and 2008. Neiman has composed works for solo piano, voice, chamber ensemble, and symphony orchestra, and the score for a documentary film entitled "Forgiveness" due to air on PBS. Toby AppelToby Appel, violin and viola, has appeared in recital and concerto performances throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Far East. He has been a member of such renowned ensembles as TASHI, and the Lenox and Audubon Quartets. Mr. Appel has been a frequent guest with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society and worked with jazz artists Chick Corea and Gary Burton. Festival performances include those with Mostly Mozart (NY), Santa Fe (NM), Seattle (WA), Bravo! Vail Valley (CO), Chamber Music Northwest (OR), and Marlboro (VT), as well as festivals in England, France, Germany, Korea, Italy, Finland, and Greece. Mr. Appel is a frequent commentator for National Public Radio's Performance Today. Currently Mr. Appel is on the viola and chamber music faculties of the Juilliard School in New York City and is Artist Lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. His chamber music and recital recordings can be heard on the Columbia, Delos, Koch International, Opus 1 and Musical Heritage Society labels. This is his third year of performing at Telluride MusicFest. Matt HaimovitzRenowned as a musical pioneer, cellist Matt Haimovitz has inspired music lovers by bringing his artistry to concert halls, clubs, coffee houses, outdoor festivals, and recently to Occupy Wall St. He made his debut at age 13 with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. Shortly after Isaac Stern selected him to perform with him on a concert in Carnegie Hall. He has since gone on to perform on the world's most esteemed stages, with such conductors as the Berlin Philharmonic with James Levine, The New Yrok Philharmonic with Mehta, and the English Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim. He was the first classical artist to play at New York's infamous CBGB Club, in a performance filmed by ABC news for "Nightline up Close." Haimovitz's recording career encompasses more than 20 years of award winning work on Deutsche Grammophon and his own Oxingale Records. Hsin-Yun HuangViolist Hsin-Yun Huang is recognized as one of the leading violists of her generation and her career as soloist and chamber musician spans the stages of North America, Europe, and the Far East. She came to international prominence in 1993 as the top prize of the ARD International Music Competition in Munich and she was the youngest-ever Gold Medalist of the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition on the Isle of Man. Solo performances have included concerto appearances with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich, the Zagreb Soloists in Paris, the Tokyo Philharmonic in Tokyo, the Berlin Radio Symphony, and the Russian State Philharmonic. Ms. Huang has collaborated with many artists including Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell. She studied at the Menuhin School in England, the Curtis Institute and The Juilliard School. Ms. Huang currently serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School, Mannes College of Music, and The Curtis Institute. This is Hsin-Yun's third year performing at Telluride MusicFest. |
